Bornholm Energy Island project
Within the Bornholm Energy Island project, Energinet and 50Hertz are joining forces to further optimise the use of wind energy. The project links several cross-border wind farms in the Baltic Sea—between Germany and Denmark—into a single hub. As a result, green electricity can be supplied to both German and Danish consumers, directly addressing the issue of capacity constraints.
But how exactly is this achieved? The two parties plan to establish a power station on the island of Bornholm. This station will supply electricity to Denmark, Germany, and potentially other European countries. The generated electricity will be converted into high-voltage direct current (HVDC) at the station, which will then be transmitted across sea and land to substations in both Germany and Denmark.
The project also brings the added benefit of physically linking the island of Bornholm to Denmark, Germany, and thus Europe. Additionally, it creates new opportunities for international cooperation between the participating countries.
CEF Energy for the BEI project
The specialists at FirstBlue supported the BEI project in applying for CEF Energy funding. This EU grant aims to enable sustainability projects that strengthen the European energy network and its associated infrastructure. The application turned out to be a great success! The BEI project secured more than half of the available CEF Energy budget—an impressive achievement that our specialists are proud of.
