CEF Transport (Connecting Europe Facility – Transport) is the European grant programme aimed at improving, making sustainable and integrating transport infrastructure within the European Union. The programme is part of Connecting Europe Facility, which also supports energy and digital projects. CEF Transport supports investments in cross-border infrastructure projects that contribute to a more efficient, safer and greener transport network in Europe.

What projects are eligible for funding?

CEF Transport subsidises projects that fit within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). This network is divided into a core network and a comprehensive network, with the aim of achieving a fully integrated European transport system by 2030 and 2050. Projects that contribute to strengthening this network – such as rail links, inland navigation, ports, road transport and multimodal nodes – are eligible for funding. Transport projects can contribute to the following themes:

  • Smart and Green
  • Smooth and safe European freight and passenger transport
  • Better cross-border connections
  • Hard infrastructure and data systems
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Alternative fuels

Who can apply?

CEF Transport is intended for public and private parties, such as public authorities, infrastructure companies, ports, railway companies, logistics service providers and other stakeholders in the transport sector. Preferably, applicants are partnerships between several Member States or the project is a cross-border initiative.

What are the benefits of CEF Transport?

With CEF Transport, organisations can receive grants of up to 50% for studies (such as feasibility or environmental impact assessments) and up to 30-50% for works, depending on the type of project and the policy objective. Projects that contribute to digitalisation (such as ERTMS), sustainable mobility or safety often stand a chance of higher grant rates.

Why apply for CEF Transport?

CEF Transport is the opportunity for organisations looking to invest in future-proof transport infrastructure. The grant helps enable major investments and strengthen international competitiveness. Moreover, participation in CEF projects contributes to the European climate goals and the energy transition in transport.
