The European Innovation Council (EIC) is an important programme from the European Commission to identify, support, and scale up breakthrough technologies and game-changing innovations across Europe. As part of the Horizon Europe programme, the EIC plays a critical role in strengthening the EU’s position as a global leader in innovation and technology.
What is the European Innovation Council?
The European Innovation Council (EIC) is an innovation programme focussed on identifying, developing and scaling up game changing innovations in the EU. The EIC has € 6 billion budget and the budget is part of the Horizon Europe programme.
For whom is the EIC?
The EIC supports startups, SMEs, and research teams and organisations. Which organisations are eligible varies by instrument.
EIC funding opportunities
The EIC offers three main instruments:
- EIC Pathfinder – Supports early-stage advanced research with grants of up to €4 million. Specifically intended for research teams.
- EIC Transition – Helps researchers and SMEs turn lab results into commercially viable innovations, offering funding of up to €2.5 million.
- EIC Accelerator – Provides blended finance (grants up to €2.5 million and equity up to €10 million) to startups and SMEs to scale up disruptive innovations.
The goal of the EIC
Its mission is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and commercial success through funding, business acceleration services, and networking opportunities. The EIC also provides access to the EIC Business Acceleration Services, including mentoring, partnerships, and access to investors.
With a strong focus on deep tech, sustainability, and strategic autonomy, the EIC is an essential mechanism to foster Europe’s competitive edge in key industries like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, health tech, and green energy.
