The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has announced the fifth funding call under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy programme. From 2 September 2025, projects can apply for Cross-Border Renewable Energy (CB RES) status—an important step for initiatives aiming to boost Europe’s green energy networks. Applications close on 5 February 2026.

What CB RES status offers

CB RES forms a dedicated strand within the broader CEF Energy scheme, supporting transnational cooperation between EU Member States. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that working across borders results in greater cost efficiency than a purely national approach. Projects eligible for consideration include:

  • Infrastructure for generating and transmitting renewable energy;
  • Energy storage facilities;
  • Grid interconnectors;
  • Digital and IT systems that enhance energy networks.

Securing CB RES status unlocks access to EU funding for feasibility studies and construction works. It also improves visibility at EU level, encourages backing from Member States, and helps build confidence among investors.

Online information session: 23 September 2025

To guide applicants, CINEA will run a virtual info day on 23 September 2025. The session will cover eligibility criteria, the assessment process, and practical tips for preparing a competitive proposal. Registration is possible at their website.

Innovative renewable energy since 2021

Since CB RES was introduced in 2021, the initiative has channelled more than € 91 million into 14 innovative projects, spanning offshore wind, sustainable biomass, and hybrid energy solutions.
