EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026 published for new groundbreaking technologies

On 20 March 2026, the European Innovation Council (EIC) unveiled the latest Pathfinder Challenges for 2026 during a series of webinars. Among the highlighted topics is ‘Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing, reflecting both rapid scientific developments and the increasing societal impact of ageing populations. As with previous Pathfinder calls, this challenge supports early-stage Research and Innovation Actions aimed at developing proof of concept for disruptive technologies. The emphasis is on bold, high-risk ideas with the potential to reshape existing markets or create entirely new ones.

Three key innovation pathways

The challenge is structured around three complementary directions, each requiring a proof of concept:

  • Biotech or pharmaceutical solutions to prevent, delay or reverse age-related diseases;
  • Biomarker-based tools to enable safe and effective use of ageing interventions;
  • New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to improve research models and accelerate innovation in healthy ageing.

By including enabling technologies such as biomarkers and NAMs, the EIC acknowledges that successful innovation depends not only on therapies, but also on validation tools and translational methods.

Shifting focus: from disease treatment to ageing itself

Age-related conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s are becoming more prevalent as populations age. Traditionally treated separately, these diseases are now increasingly understood as interconnected through underlying ageing processes. The EIC encourages projects that move beyond treating individual conditions and instead target the biological mechanisms of ageing itself, offering a more systemic and potentially transformative approach.

Focus on real-world impact and implementation

A defining feature of this call is its strong emphasis on practical application. Applicants must demonstrate how their innovations can progress towards higher Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) and eventual real-world use. Key expectations include:

  • Clear strategies for implementation, regulatory pathways and public awareness around longevity;
  • Validation of biotech solutions in vertebrate models, alongside future clinical planning;
  • Robust exploitation plans addressing ethical, societal and economic factors;
  • Demonstrated usability and feasibility for biomarker tools;
  • Validation and benchmarking of NAMs against existing models;
  • Consideration of sex and gender differences in all approaches.

While shorter projects are permitted, the EIC recommends using the full five-year duration to maximise impact.

A more mature Pathfinder programme

This challenge highlights the continued evolution of the Pathfinder programme. While scientific excellence remains essential, there is now a stronger focus on how research translates into tangible outcomes. Applicants are expected not only to present innovative ideas, but also to show clear pathways towards implementation, addressing potential barriers from the outset.
