CEF Energy, part of the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, is a grant programme aimed at strengthening Europe’s energy infrastructure. Projects that contribute to a safer, more sustainable and better connected energy network within Europe are eligible. This initiative helps EU member states realise cross-border energy projects, which is essential for the energy transition and the EU’s climate goals.
CEF Energy call in 2025
One call is published each year by the European Commission. A budget of €600 million has been made available for the 2025 call. Applications for this call can be submitted from 3 April 2025 until 16 September 2025.
EU list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs)
To be eligible, your project must be on the European list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs) and Projects of Mutual Interest (PMIs). To be on that list, your project must, among other things, contribute to European energy goals, increase competitiveness and have a significant impact on the market of at least two European countries.
Which projects are eligible?
CEF Energy supports large-scale strategic infrastructure projects that promote energy security, integration of renewable energy sources and a well-functioning internal energy market. These include the construction of high-voltage connections, LNG terminals, smart grids and cross-border energy storage facilities.
Which activities are eligible for funding?
CEF Energy offers grants for studies and works. Studies can be, for example, feasibility analyses, environmental impact assessments or design documentation. Works relate to the actual implementation of projects, such as the construction of an interconnector between two countries. The grant covers up to 50% of the eligible costs, giving a significant financial boost to large-scale energy initiatives.
The application process
To be eligible for funding through CEF Energy, projects must first be included on the European Commission’s PCI list. Then, project developers, public authorities or energy companies, can apply for funding during annual call rounds (calls).
Important for the energy goals of the EU
CEF Energy is thus not just another financing instrument, it is an important strategic pillar of European energy policy. It contributes to achieving the Green Deal goals and paves the way for an integrated, sustainable and future-proof energy network in Europe.
