The EU Missions are a key strategic component of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (2021–2027), designed to tackle some of the greatest challenges that Europe is facing. The biggest challenges are within the topics Climate, Cancer, Ocean & Water, Cities and soil. These missions aim to deliver tangible results by 2030 through coordinated efforts across research, innovation, policy, and citizen engagement.
What are the EU Missions?
The EU Missions are unique in their goal-oriented, impact-driven approach. They bridge the gap between policy, science, and society, inviting stakeholders from all sectors—public authorities, researchers, industry leaders, SMEs, and citizens—to collaborate in shaping a greener, healthier, and more resilient Europe. There are five official EU Missions under Horizon Europe:
- Adaptation to Climate Change: support at least 150 European regions and communities to become climate resilient by 2030
- Cancer: working with Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure and solutions to live longer and better
- Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030
- 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030
- A Soil Deal for Europe: 100 living labs and lighthouses to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030
