Unlocking Innovation for the Defence sector: The European Defence Fund (EDF)

The European Defence Fund (EDF) is a flagship funding programme launched by the European Union to strengthen Europe’s defence capabilities through collaborative research and development. With an annual budget of around €1 billion, the EDF supports innovative defence projects that enhance the EU’s strategic autonomy and foster cross-border cooperation among Member States and their industries.

What is the EDF?

The European Defence Fund was established to incentivize joint investments in defence technologies and systems across the EU. It finances both the research (up to 100% funding) and development (up to 80% co-funding) of defence products and technologies that are strategically important to the European Union. The EDF prioritizes projects that involve participants from at least three EU countries, promoting industrial collaboration and the integration of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into the defence value chain.

What type of projects are eligible?

EDF calls for proposals typically focus on a range of strategic domains, including:

  • Cyber defence
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Space technologies
  • Unmanned systems (drones, autonomous vehicles)
  • Advanced sensors and communication systems
  • Next-generation weapon systems

These priority areas reflect Europe’s ambition to enhance its defence resilience and technological edge in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.

Why apply for EDF funding?

Participating in the European Defence Fund offers multiple benefits. It not only provides access to substantial funding, but also helps companies and research institutions build international partnerships, increase visibility, and contribute to Europe’s security and innovation capacity.

How to apply?

EDF calls are published annually in which applications can be submitted. Successful applications require a strong consortium, a clear technological roadmap, and alignment with EU defence priorities.
