€ 5.4 billion (2021 - 2027)

The LIFE Programme is the European Union’s key funding instrument for environmental and climate action projects. Established in 1992, LIFE supports innovative projects that contribute to the implementation, updating, and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation. With a strong focus on sustainability, biodiversity, and the green transition, LIFE is an essential funding source for organizations aiming to make a lasting environmental impact.

The sub-programmes of LIFE

The current LIFE programme runs from 2021 to 2027, with a total budget of €5.4 billion. It is structured around four sub-programmes:

  1. Nature and Biodiversity
  2. Circular Economy and Quality of Life
  3. Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation
  4. Clean Energy Transition

What type of projects are eligible for funding?

Projects funded under LIFE often include pilot projects, best practice initiatives, and demonstration actions. One of the key strengths of the LIFE Programme is its focus on scalability and replicability. Projects are encouraged to demonstrate innovative solutions that can be implemented in other regions or sectors. In addition, LIFE often covers up to 60% of eligible project costs, making it an attractive funding source for ambitious environmental initiatives. Your project should meet some criteria to be eligible:To be eligible:

  • The project size is at least €1 million;
  • The project lead time is on average 2 to 5 years;
  • The project is in the pilot/demonstration phase, at least TRL 6 to TRL 8;
  • The project may not be funded from another EU grant;
  • The innovation must be replicable in other EU member states. The applicant keeps interested parties informed of project progress via a website;
  • International cooperation (within the EU) offers significant benefits in the assessment framework but is not mandatory.
