Are you a startup working on cutting-edge technologies for defence and security? Then the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF) could offer valuable opportunities. Established by NATO, this investment fund aims to stimulate technological innovation among member states, contributing to a stronger and more secure alliance. With a total budget of approximately € 1 billion, the fund supports deep-tech developments with both civilian and military applications.

What are the NATO Innovation Fund’s key focus areas?

The fund is geared towards breakthroughs in the following deep-tech fields:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Quantum Technologies
  • Hypersonic Technologies
  • Biotechnology
  • Autonomous Systems
  • Energy Storage
  • Cybersecurity
  • Space Technologies

Who is eligible to apply?

Startups based in one of the participating NATO countries and developing technologies that could enhance the Alliance’s defence capabilities are eligible for the Innovation Fund. Backed by contributions from 24 NATO member states, the fund helps startups connect with relevant stakeholders across these countries. Initial investments can reach up to € 15 million per project, with the potential for further funding as development progresses.

Working in tandem with DIANA

The NATO Innovation Fund works closely with DIANA (Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic), another NATO initiative. While the NIF focuses on direct investments in young companies, DIANA supports the acceleration of defence-related innovations (TRL ≥4) through a network of test centres and innovation hubs across NATO countries.

Both initiatives aim to ensure NATO maintains a technological edge over global competitors.

Exploring your opportunities with the NATO Innovation Fund

Unlike many other funding schemes, the NATO Innovation Fund does not operate with fixed calls or deadlines. Instead, it is open to applications year-round. Startups can submit a compelling pitch at any time. If the fund sees potential, they will initiate the investment process. Please note: DIANA does work with set application rounds.
