LIFE RE&UCE - Alucha

Calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) is one of the most widely used minerals globally, particularly within the paper industry. However, conventional extraction from limestone quarries is highly resource-intensive and environmentally damaging. As part of the LIFE RE&UCE project — a promising collaboration between Alucha, Essity, and the Grolman Group — CaCO₃ is now being sustainably recycled from wastepaper using an innovative pyrolysis technology. This contributes to CO₂ reduction and supports circular production processes.

LIFE RE&UCE Alucha

From pilot plant to demonstration facility

The project focuses on the sustainable recovery of Circular Calcium Carbonate (CCC) and renewable energy in the form of pyrolysis oil, derived from paper mill sludge — a significant waste stream within the paper industry.

Alucha currently operates a small-scale facility (Mine1) that produces both CCC and bio-oil. With support from the EU LIFE programme, the consortium is now working towards the construction of a large-scale demonstration plant (Mine2). This marks a crucial step towards scaling up and enabling commercial applications across various sectors, including plastics, adhesives, paints, and rubber.

FirstBlue: strategic funding partner

FirstBlue successfully supported the consortium in preparing the LIFE grant application and negotiating the Grant Agreement. Our experts will also continue to assist throughout the project duration (May 2024 – October 2027) to ensure compliance with funding conditions and proper reporting.

By establishing new value chains and conducting feasibility studies for replication across Europe, the LIFE RE&UCE project makes a tangible contribution to the circular economy.
