Circular Steam Project
A prime example is the Circular Steam Project, a collaboration between chemical companies LyondellBasell and Covestro. Operational since 2021, this project saves enough energy each year to power 90,000 households and prevents CO₂ emissions equivalent to 31,000 cars. Through targeted investments in sustainability, this project makes a tangible contribution to climate goals.
Porthos Project
The ambitious Porthos Project is another clear illustration of how innovation and collaboration can lead to sustainable outcomes. In this initiative, PoR is partnering with Gasunie and EBN to develop a new infrastructure for capturing and storing CO₂ in a depleted gas field in the North Sea, approximately 20 kilometres off the coast. This storage solution is both efficient and cost-effective. The project received an impressive grant of over € 102 million from the European CEF Energy programme – a major milestone for the consortium within the CEF Energy programme.
Major industrial players such as Shell, ExxonMobil, Air Liquide and Air Products are now part of the project. From 2024, they are expected to jointly capture and store around 2.5 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.
