The Rhône CO₂ Project
To address this pressing challenge, Société du Pipeline Sud-Européen (SPSE), which manages the pipeline network across the Rhône Valley, has partnered with Elengy, operators of an LNG terminal near Marseille, to launch the Rhône CO₂ project. This forward-looking initiative aims to repurpose a 300 km disused pipeline, enabling the transport of up to four million tonnes of captured CO₂ each year. At the same time, port facilities are being expanded to allow for the export of CO₂, for reuse in industrial applications or for permanent storage. Together, these efforts mark a major step in reducing the carbon footprint of one of Europe’s most industrialised areas.
Partnership with FirstBlue
To help realise this vision, SPSE and Elengy enlisted Firstlue’s expertise in obtaining European funding for the Rhône CO₂ project. Our team successfully supported the consortium throughout the application process for the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy programme. After the project’s approval, FirstBlue continued to assist during the Grant Agreement Negotiations and will remain involved in project reporting. This ongoing support ensures that SPSE and Elengy can stay focused on advancing the energy transition while we help streamline the administrative process.
